Paperwork For Trade Vehicle Scrap

For paperwork for trade vehicle scrap, the main job is to keep the transfer clear and the DVLA record up to date. If the vehicle is being scrapped, take care of any private plate first if needed, give the V5C to the ATF, keep the yellow motor trade section, and then tell DVLA so the tax and keeper record can be updated.

  • Keep records: Hand the V5C to the ATF and keep the yellow motor trade section so you still have a basic record of the disposal.
  • Tell DVLA: Notify DVLA after scrapping, because failing to do so can lead to a fine and leaves the keeper record unfinished.
  • Check tax: Vehicle tax does not carry on automatically; DVLA updates it when they get the notice, and refunds cover full remaining months.
  • Use SORN: If the vehicle stays off the road before disposal, SORN can apply while it sits on a drive, in a garage, or on private land.

If a work van, pickup, or trade vehicle has reached the end of its road use, the paperwork should be sorted before the key handover becomes a memory. The vehicle may be parked on a drive, tucked in a yard, or waiting by a gate, but the same rule applies: keep the records clear, then tell DVLA what has happened.

Start with the vehicle’s status

The first question is simple: is it being scrapped, or is it just being parked up for a while? If it is going for scrap, GOV.UK says it must go to an authorised treatment facility. If it is staying off the road for now, SORN may be the right step instead.

That difference matters because the paperwork is different. A vehicle being kept in a garage or on private land can be made off the road with SORN. A vehicle being scrapped needs the disposal route and DVLA notice to match what actually happened.

What to hand over

For a normal scrap handover, the keeper should give the V5C to the ATF and keep the yellow motor trade section. That gives the facility the details it needs and leaves you with a basic record of the transfer.

If the vehicle has a private plate you want to keep, deal with that first. Once the vehicle is scrapped, it is too late to treat the registration as a separate job. It is better to sort the plate while the vehicle is still treated as yours.

Where the vehicle has been written off, sold, transferred, scrapped, stolen, exported, or made tax-exempt, DVLA uses that information to update the tax position. The record needs to match the real status, not a rough description.

Tell DVLA promptly

Once the vehicle has gone, tell DVLA. That step is not a formality to leave until later. GOV.UK says failing to tell DVLA can lead to a fine, so the notice should be part of the handover routine, not an afterthought.

The tax side is worth checking too. Refunds are only for full remaining months, and they are worked out from the date DVLA gets the information. That means the timing of the notice can affect what comes back.

If the vehicle was already off the road under SORN, keep that status in mind until disposal is complete. SORN is for vehicles kept off the road on a drive, in a garage, or on private land, so it should fit the real situation, not just the way the vehicle looks on the day.

When parts have been removed

Sometimes a trade vehicle is stripped before scrap day. GOV.UK says if parts are removed before scrapping, the vehicle must be off the road and the parts must be removed without causing pollution. That is the point where the disposal process stops being casual and starts needing care.

An ATF may charge if essential parts have already been removed, so it helps to be honest about the vehicle’s condition before it arrives. A missing battery, removed catalyst, or other stripped-out item can change how the vehicle is handled.

If the vehicle is destroyed, a Certificate of Destruction can be issued. That gives a clearer end point for the record, which is useful when the vehicle has been part of a business fleet or work set-up.

Keep the handover clean

A tidy handover is usually the easiest handover. Keep the keys, V5C, and any plate paperwork separate from tools, job sheets, and private items in the cab. If the van still has service cards, fuel receipts, or workshop notes in the glovebox, remove them before the collection day.

The aim is not paperwork for its own sake. It is to make sure the scrap vehicle is treated as scrapped, the keeper record is updated, and any tax or off-road status follows the right route.

Finish with the right notice

Once the vehicle has gone to an ATF, tell DVLA and keep your own record of what was handed over. If the vehicle is not yet going, but it is standing still on private land, use SORN or leave it properly declared off the road until the disposal day comes.

For a trade vehicle, that small admin step saves bigger trouble later. Check the plate, keep the yellow slip, send the DVLA notice, and match the paperwork to what actually happened to the vehicle.
